Imagine you are walking to work and a stranger going past hits you, no bruises or marks but you get an awful fright. A few weeks later, a different person jumps you and knocks you over and says they were only messing and stop being such a snowflake. Another few weeks later and another stranger going past comes shouting in your face and leaves a scratch and minor bruise but you can’t see them under your coat anyway, so no damage done...right...
Or maybe wrong....how would you feel about walking to work? Would strangers make you nervous?
This is what our dogs are suffering over and over and I get several emails PER DAY about confident, happy social dogs confidence damaged by untrained off lead dogs sometimes friendly, sometimes just inappropriate and occasionally aggressive.
⚠️ If your friendly dog runs up to other onlead dogs to play, you need to teach them to recall and stay focused on you or else leash them while you pass.
⚠️ If your dog is not friendly and is going to scare another dog and human you need to reach out and get help ASAP from a qualified trainer that doesn’t use aversives which will in time make this behaviour worse
We had a scary instance walking today, which was the second time with the same dog. And still the dog was not leashed! There’s just no excuse for allowing your dog to scare the bejaysus out of other dogs over and over. I don’t know how someone can put their head on their pillow at night when they are probably doing LONG TERM damage to a dog and owners confidence. Of course, I equally know dogs are animals and occasionally there’ll be the odd accidental incident where you are caught off guard or recall fails but it’s what happens next that will count...do you allow them to keep doing it or take action and manage and train them.
Please, get a long line, teach, train, reward, manage and get help where needed. These unruly dogs are ruining off lead fun for the other 80% of responsible dog owners 💔
I usually keep my page a space for positive and judgement free advice but it’s time to advocate for all the dogs on the other end of these inappropriate interactions now. I love to train recall, it’s my favourite so please get in touch and I can help.
